What BackupMaster Backup App Can and Cannot Back Up for Shopify Stores

Ensuring the security of your Shopify store's data is of utmost importance. BackupMaster, our professional backup app for Shopify, offers peace of mind by securely backing up essential information. It is crucial for your team to understand precisely what our app can and cannot back up, so in case of an emergency and data loss, there are no surprises. This article provides a comprehensive overview of what BackupMaster backs up and what it does not.

What BackupMaster Backs Up

The BackupMaster app ensures comprehensive backup for your store, including:

  • Products and Product Images
  • Orders
  • Customers
  • Themes
  • Files
  • Pages
  • Blogs
  • Custom Collections
  • Smart Collections
  • Locations
  • Saved Searches
  • Policies
  • Shipping Zones
  • Shopify Files
  • Metafields
  • Inventories - BETA

At BackupMaster, we strive to expand the items our app can back up, aiming to provide the most comprehensive backup solution. Recently, we added inventory backup support, making us the only app in the market with this feature. This capability is currently in beta and available to all customers as we monitor its performance. Looking ahead, we plan to support Translations and Meta Objects. While we can't provide a specific ETA, our commitment remains to ensure your store's data is secure and comprehensive.

What BackupMaster Does Not Back Up

While we strive to cover a broad spectrum of data, certain constraints imposed by the Shopify platform and third-party apps prevent our backup app from supporting all types of data in your Shopify store. The following items are not supported:

  • Store settings
  • Third-party apps and their data
  • Reviews
  • Redirects
  • Coupons
  • Translations
  • Companies
  • Navigation menus
  • Store analytics and reports
  • Any other items not explicitly listed that define what we can back up

Special Note: Backup of Metafields

We recognize the critical importance of backing up metafields, as they play a vital role in enhancing and customizing your store. Metafields can be added to various parts of your store, including products, collections, and more. Our app diligently backs up metafield values added to:

  • Products
  • Product images
  • Variants
  • Blogs
  • Blog posts
  • Collections
  • Pages

Verifying Backed-Up Metafields: Customers can verify the backed-up metafields by navigating to a product and checking the metafields in the item card. This ensures that all data is securely backed up.

Backing Up Customer and Order Metafields: Additionally, we can back up metafield values added to customers and orders upon request to our customer support team.

Important Note about Metafield Values: While our app backs up metafield values, it's essential to understand that these values may reference files or external resources outside of Shopify. Our app will back up the values themselves but not the actual files or external resources. However, if a metafield value references an image stored in Shopify Files, our app will back up the value as a reference and the actual file will be backed up and located in the Files category of backup storage.

What BackupMaster Can Transfer Between Shopify Stores

While BackupMaster's primary function is to provide comprehensive backups for your Shopify store, it also excels in transferring data between stores. BackupMaster can efficiently move data, including Products, Smart Collections, Custom Collections, Pages, Blogs, Files, Themes, and Customer information.

Constraints of Transferring Metafields Between Shopify Stores: Our app includes metafields during transfers to ensure all critical components and detailed custom information of your store are accurately preserved. Please note that if a metafield references a resource such as a product or an image in the source store during the transfer, this metafield will be impossible to transfer. This is because Shopify does not allow references to other stores in metafield values, as these references are based on unique IDs specific to the source store. Consequently, any metafield that includes such references cannot be moved to the destination store.
